Each alternative in detail
1.FanBar
Open-source project (maintained by us)Best for: A free, fully open-source fan controller that lives in the menu bar.

Common questions
What is the best free alternative to Macs Fan Control?
For fan control specifically, FanBar is free with every feature included and is fully open source, with fixed RPM, presets, and temperature curves. Stats is a strong free system monitor, but its own documentation says its fan control is in legacy mode and no longer maintained.
Which Macs Fan Control alternatives work on Apple Silicon?
FanBar and TG Pro both state support for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. iStat Menus includes fan control but does not list supported models on its product page. smcFanControl was built for Intel Macs.
Is there an open-source Macs Fan Control alternative?
Yes. FanBar (GPL-3.0), Stats (MIT), and smcFanControl (GPL-2.0) are open source. FanBar is the one whose fan control is actively maintained and whose privileged helper source is published alongside the app.
Do I need a fan control app at all?
Often not. macOS manages fans automatically and well for most workloads. A fan control app is useful when you want quieter idle behavior, more aggressive cooling during sustained loads, or visibility into temperatures that macOS doesn't show.
Free, open source, and in your menu bar.
Every feature is included. Read the source — helper and all — before you install.
